Advertising Career - Sell the Sizzle

Something for Everyone:

There is something for everyone in an Advertising Career.  You can bring to this career a variety of skills and become very successful.  It does take a certain amount of flair and ego, however, there are positions for the grounded person that all fall under the umbrella of "Advertising".

Here are just a few typical ways to get going in an Advertising career:

Entry Level Advertising Positions:

  • Receptionist

  • Assistant to a Manager

  • Sales Assistant

  • Mailroom Clerk

  • Music or Program Director Assistant

Skilled Level Advertising Positions:

  • Sales Representative

  • Copywriter

  • Office and Bookkeeping Personnel

  • Broadcast Assistant, Voice Personality

  • Engineering Department Personnel

  • Managers, Directors (Music, Art, Programming, News)

Somewhere for Everyone:

You can find jobs in advertising in many businesses, from car dealers to government.  Where there is a product or service, there is a need to let others know about it.  Media outlets are another popular place people enjoy working.  For example:

  • Newspaper

  • Radio Broadcast Stations

  • Television Broadcast Stations

  • Print Magazines

  • Product Management

  • Print Production, printers, etc.

  • National and Local Advertising Agencies

  • Public Service Agencies

  • Government

  • Schools

  • Hollywood - movies, etc.

And there is much involved in this very broad and interesting career area.  If you have energy, you can be on the front lines, as a radio or television personality, sales representative, media representative, product representative for a company, public service fund raiser, and more.  These are the people who are "movers and shakers", they get things done, with the major emphasis on sales.  Managers will tell them every morning, "go sell something!".  And they do.

Rewards can be incredibly significant.  In sales, you are your only income limitation.  Combine energy with knowledge, a friendly personality, and a good product, and you are on your way.  Usually, if you can sell one thing, you can sell anything.  The principles are the same, only product knowledge differs.

If you would rather work in the background, but still enjoy the glitz and glamour, get into the engineering department, sales office, front or back office, bookkeeping, or mailing and delivery operations.  Every department supports another, and all are important to the end goal of selling the product or service.  The main difference is that personalities and salespeople get paid more.

An Advertising Career is exciting, rewarding, and open to all.  Get your foot in the door, and work your way up, it will pay off!
